Session Summary

Epistemic Justice Across Learning Environments

Sun, April 16, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Northwestern/Ohio State

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The goal of this session is to explore current and future methods for fostering epistemic justice (Penuel & Watkins, 2019)—marginalized students positioned as knowledge constructors—across both formal and informal STEM learning settings. Across these sites, Stroupe (2022) argues that people with the power to influence the design and facilitation of learning spaces often reproduce epistemic justice at fours levels: moment-to-moment, micro (within the site), meso (between local sites), and macro (between sites, including at national and international institutions/rhetorical level). In response to the critiques of how epistemic justice can operate in multi-dimensional, this session aims to explore how to design settings to combat epistemic injustice at these levels individually and how these levels may be connected.
