Out-of-School STEM Learning: Youth-Driven, Applied Data Science Addressing Needs in Their Own Communities

Abstract

Research on after-school and community-science programs for youth shows that along with developing scientific literacy, youth have a place to learn, to question, to be with others who share values and interest in science as tool for action. Youth involved in community-based participatory research become engaged in authentic scientific learning, recognize that their contribution to research is valuable, and have positive learning experiences. This demonstration session features youth team projects from MAPSCorps in Chicago, an out-of-school time applied STEM program where youth develop a plan to scientifically investigate a community issue, collect on-the-ground mapping data on assets in their communities, and analyze the data within a historical framework so that they can recommend policies to remedy long-standing issues marginalizing their communities.
