Word Exposure and Vocabulary in Action: Exploring Frequency, Lexical Pragmatics, and Their Relationships

Abstract
This session brings together three papers that share results related to vocabulary exposure and knowledge of how words are used in sentences and expressions. Each paper moves beyond vocabulary as a unidimensional construct and addresses an important component of word knowledge. One paper explores the distribution of rare words in texts, and one tests if frequency predicts word knowledge in a multiword expression task and synonym task. Two studies explore how children process and use multiword expressions, an essential component of academic language and reading comprehension. One paper explores how word frequency predicts multi-word expression knowledge, and one paper explores how this kind of word knowledge is connected to reading comprehension.
