Reading Apprenticeship: Lessons From Impact Studies Over Time and Across Contexts

Fri, April 14, 9:50 to 11:20am CDT (9:50 to 11:20am CDT), Chicago Marriott Downtown Magnificent Mile, Floor: 6th Floor, Northwestern/Ohio State

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium will offer analysis and discussion of the impact of Reading Apprenticeship, a professional learning model and instructional framework for middle and high school educators. The symposium presenters have designed and/or conducted many rigorous studies of this research-based intervention over the past 25 years. Collectively the studies present a rare opportunity to examine what works, and what does not work, in teacher professional learning in varied modalities. Reading Apprenticeship has been tested in time intensive, discipline-specific formats, as well as in shorter, cross-disciplinary, hybrid formats. Overall, the findings to date indicate that the field must invest in in-person, discipline-specific professional learning to yield results in teacher practice change and student learning outcomes.
