Abstract

This symposium brings together an international group of researchers who have taken up the call to explore citizenship education in early childhood by understanding children as citizens of the present, rather than merely as citizens-in-formation. How can educators embrace and support children’s agency as democratic citizens of ECE classrooms? Working from a variety of theoretical perspectives and a range of methodological approaches, the panel will share the insights their work has yielded as well as challenges, tensions, and future directions for this emerging area of inquiry. The session will begin with an overview, followed by brief presentations from individual panelists, a moderated panel discussion, and a Q&A with the audience.
