Stories of Arts, Embodiment, and Praxis in Pre-K–20 Leader Preparation

Abstract

Public education’s ability to actualize its commitment to equity rests on the shoulders of courageous leaders. R-1 institutions of higher learning pride themselves on preparing leadership students for the arduous task of leading for justice, yet readily acknowledge that leadership is an embodied practice difficult to learn within a classroom setting. This symposium will advance a multi-informant understanding of the design and early outcomes of one R-1 university’s attempts to fill leaders’ knowing-doing gap by integrating arts-based and embodiment modalities throughout pre-service preparation. In addition to exploring the knowledge base supporting these liberatory design principles and considering findings from three active, multi-year research projects, symposium participants will be introduced to embodiment in the most appropriate way: by experiencing it themselves.
