Critical Pedagogies of the Fifth Dimension: Designing Intergenerational Learning Ecologies During COVID-19

Abstract

This symposium gathers research that explores the learning of teachers and youth across designed intergenerational learning ecologies during the COVID-19 pandemic. Drawing on Fifth Dimension frameworks that leverage robust community and university collaborations, papers focus on the potential for transformative learning that can emerge when the boundaries between institutions, the academic and the everyday, are ruptured through design. Authors pay special attention to the ways in which learning design centers equity for non-dominant or historically marginalized communities, including communities of color. Work presented in this symposium highlights the importance of mediation, relationality, and a proleptic orientation for adults and children in their identity development as well as imagining and organizing towards new possible social futures that are just and equitable.
