The Exploration of Black Liberatory Education in Practice

Abstract

Black students continue to encounter profound anti-blackness in U.S. classrooms and schools. As the particular, powerful and positive role that Black teachers have on Black students’ educational experiences and outcomes continues to clarify, questions arise about the pedagogical strategies Black teachers employ to positively influence Black students’ learning and success in school. This symposium brings together researchers and practitioners of Black education whose work aims to center and understand the efficacy of Black liberatory orientations to educational praxis with Black students. Presenters will first discuss a conceptualization of Black Liberatory teaching - Black Liberatory Pedagogy. Then, presenters will share research examining the efficacy of practical applications of Black liberatory teaching and learning approaches in English, Social Justice, and Mathematics education.
