Multiliteracies in Diverse Contexts: New Possibilities for School and Community Collaboration

Abstract

As literacy scholars who work with children, youth, and communities, multiliteracies provide us with a theoretical framework to consider a broadened view of texts associated with information and multimedia technologies, account for linguistic and cultural diversity, and exmine varied representational modes that extended beyond traditional language-based approaches (New London Group, 1996). In this symposium, we present the various ways that young people engage with multiliteracies in school and community spaces to demonstrate the contrast between the outside and inside perspectives of multiliteracies. Collaboratively, we position literacy education as the site for social changes and explore new possibilities in school and community collaboration that speak to the truth of children, youth, and communities from racially, linguistically, and culturally diverse backgrounds.
