From attempts to sanitize the curriculum to efforts to divert funding to private schools, public education is under attack. Far from a new assault, this effort has been underway for decades. Increasingly, organized teachers and their associations have emerged as the staunchest defenders of public schools – institutions that are critical for American democracy and the fight for social justice. Shortly before the conference, {title of book} – an edited, interdisciplinary, peer reviewed volume – will be published. This symposium brings together chapter authors with Chicago union leaders and rank and file members to engage in dialog and conversation about the assault on public schools, the role of unions as protectors of public education, and the path ahead.
