Growing Your Own Teachers: Building Community-Focused Teacher Pipelines

Abstract
Grow Your Own (GYO) programs are an increasingly popular strategy for growing and diversifying the teacher workforce. These programs are forged through partnerships between school districts, institutions of higher education, and community-based organizations to recruit and prepare community members to become teachers in local schools. We propose this symposium to discuss what we as researchers and practitioners are learning about the policies and practices of these localized programs. We offer a deep dive into what it means to recruit and prepare teachers from home communities and the transformative ways GYO programs meet the needs of teacher candidates and the school systems where they will work.
