Session Type: Symposium
In the current transnational and global society, it is critical to acknowledge and leverage multiplicity, intersections, and contestations. Transnational funds of knowledge (Kwon et al., 2019) integrate the funds of knowledge concept with a transnationalism framework, which reveal the unique knowledge, experiences, and skills acquired by teachers, students, and parents who move across countries and contexts. Four papers in this symposium provide detailed evidence of the rich knowledge transnational teachers, students and families possess from a wide range of educational contexts, which counters the dominant perspectives of multilingual learners being deficit-based. Research findings presented in this symposium call for urgent creation of spaces for multilingual learners to leverage their transnational experiences and knowledge.
