Vice-Presidential Session. African Immigrant Youth: Schooling, Education, and Civic Engagement in the African Diaspora

Abstract
Amid complex contexts of anti-Blackness confronting African immigrants in the U.S. and globally, transformative education research to support schooling, education, and civic engagement experiences for African immigrant students will increasingly depend on enacting generative research frameworks, teaching approaches, and methodologies. In this symposium, literacy and language scholars thus engage in necessary conversation with social studies- and mathematics-education scholars from the U.S. and Canada to address the scope and heterogeneity of African immigrant youth’s schooling, education, and civic-engagement experiences. Authors extend African epistemologies and ontologies including Africanfuturism, Diaspora studies, transnationalism, and a Sankofan approach to examine approaches to research, teacher education, and teaching that identify key schooling, education, and civic-engagement practices associated with and extending student’s varied literacies and identities.
