Session Summary

Exploring (Ethno)Religious Truths in Curriculum Studies: A Dialogue Across Global Perspectives

Sun, April 16, 8:00 to 9:30am CDT (8:00 to 9:30am CDT), Hyatt Regency Chicago, Floor: West Tower - Concourse Level, Water Tower

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Numerous issues surrounding educational truths in our society today involve religious sense-making and, in many situations, religious assertions of social control. This session highlights religious sense-making and ethnoreligious nationalism as critical inquiry areas for studying and imagining new possibilities for curriculum across diverse global contexts. It invites global perspective-taking and dialogue around how these forces are shaping and might differently shape curriculum practices and inquiries. Intellectually, the session organizes around two layers of questioning: a) What value or impact can be embodied, enacted, or otherwise engaged through studying ethnoreligious nationalisms and religious sense making in relation to various curricular artifacts and domains? and b) What interpretive processes might researchers engage to evoke, advance, and contest educational truths vis-a-vis the religious?
