Session Summary

Seeking Truth About the Context of School-to-Prison Nexus: Role of Racial Trauma and Healing

Fri, April 14, 11:40am to 1:10pm CDT (11:40am to 1:10pm CDT), SwissĂ´tel Chicago, Floor: Lucerne Level, Lucerne 3

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

Voices of those who have been directly impacted by the school-to-prison nexus have not been included enough for us as researchers to suggest real, tangible, and impactful solutions. The session explicitly examines the role of racial trauma and inequity in educational context. In this session, we include a narrative co-created between a researcher and an individual exiting the justice system, voices of educators teaching inside the walls of juvenile correctional facilities, perspectives of teachers, students, and parents in public schools as well as critique and challenge from educational researchers to provide an opportunity to discuss and co-learn the truth about the context of the school-to-prison nexus and engage in conversations about possible solutions for practice, policy, and research.
