Material and Digital A/r/tographic Explorations in Community

Abstract

This symposium explores both the centrality of materiality within research practices, particularly how the body moves to encounter physical spaces and places, alongside the sweep and complexities of the digital. When COVID-19 arrived in March 2020, an arts-based study group began to meet online, attending to the juxtapositions and intersections between the material and digital. An unfolding of a/r/tographic projects ensued, first as students, then in the support of others while serving as research assistants, teaching assistants, and/or co-instructors. Focusing on the theme of walking from 2018 to the present, this work formed a rich cluster of artistic, research, and pedagogical activities. Through a/r/tographic walking practices, thinking arises from within as individuals take each step.
