Session Type: Roundtable Session
Our session considers the intersections of language, place, and learning among the relational experiences of Indigenous Latinx youth and allied communities. We discuss these intersections philosophically through four empirical ethnographic studies. These studies focus on diverse educational contexts: a high school in the Pacific Northwest with Indigenous Latinx youth; an intergenerational Zapoteco philharmonic band in Tongva/Los Angeles; a Maya-Mam language revitalization class in Huichin/Oakland; and a transnational ethnography of Maya-Mam youth across Oakland (Huichin) and San Juan Atitán, Huehuetenango, Guatemala (Xjan Xwan). Collectively, our papers unpack relations of language, place, and learning as sites of Indigenous diasporic identity, autonomy, and solidarity.
