A Tour of Solidarity Studios: Underground Hip-Hop Recording Studios as Sites of Youth Knowledge Production

Abstract

As an epicenter in the history of hip-hop culture, Chicago has also been home to countless grassroots educational spaces where hip-hop arts are leveraged for youth sociopolitical becoming. During the Solidarity Studios (SS) site visit, participants will tour a studio that encapsulates the design principles of hip-hop pedagogy. The three-hour event will examine how youth cultivate their voices within learning spaces rooted in cultural knowledge. The program will include an interactive cypher where site visit attendees contribute to collective knowledge production, and SS hosts share the fruits of our learning environments. The harvests we share will include musical stories published by our youth contributors as well as research findings about how their stories catalyze local social change and international resonance.
