Thu, May 4, 9:45 to 11:15am CDT (9:45 to 11:15am CDT), SIG Virtual Rooms, Research on the Education of Asian and Pacific Americans SIG Virtual Session Room

Session Type: Virtual Workshop

Abstract

The Model Minority is a term that has been used to describe Asian, Pacific Islanders, and Desi Americans. However, this seemingly complimentary term is more negative than positive for all minority groups. This research investigates what this myth is, how it ties into racism and white supremacy, and how it impacts those who have been stereotyped as the "model" of minorities both on and off campus. We will also interrogate and delve into this educational research of consequence for our APIDA students in the pursuit of truth.
