Consequential Teaching: Centering Teachers' Identities-in-Practice in Complex Times

Abstract

In the spirit of advancing “humanizing, opportunity-centered projects of impactful consequence” this symposium will foster dialogue among teachers, teacher educators, and researchers as we navigate uncertain times, where there is often a deep divide between the work that teachers hoped to do and the realities experienced in schools. Inspired by critical autoethnographic methods, our session begins with a conceptual overview of practice theories of identities to frame the experiences of educators from a range of backgrounds and interests, including youth perspectives. Our interactive session will center the experiences of teachers from various backgrounds, seeking to encourage meaningful audience participation as we work collectively toward the interrogation of what counts as consequential teaching and research in today’s educational contexts.
