Encrypted Storytelling in Fugitive Learning Spaces: Disseminating Educational Research When Your Pedagogy Is Secret

Abstract

Widely disseminated research about how learning works is crucial to the advancement of pedagogical design. However, sometimes learning happens within environments where learners don’t want their stories shared and teachers don’t want their curricula found out. This is especially true for marginalized communities of color, whose learning environments are often policed and surveilled by oppressive institutions. Each of the symposium contributors subscribe to the methodology of encrypted storytelling, a form of coded counter-story that is only partially legible to the public(s). Researchers will tell stories from the field about phenomena which must remain encrypted. In order to protect ongoing movements for liberation, we will share parts of our findings with the AERA audience while masking others.
