Abstract
This symposium focuses on different ways to enact performance-based accountability (PBA) in education and different configurations of policy instruments in various contexts, as well as possible intended or unintended consequences for the teaching profession and school practices. The variety of cases covered allows for a better understanding of the circumstances and mechanisms that determine different outcomes, educational practices and organisational responses. The session demonstrates that the implementation of PBA policies depends on the dynamics of negotiation, sensemaking, persuasion and value conflicts.
