Session Type: Symposium
Educators as well as school and district leaders alike are increasingly aware of the limitations and even the harm caused by test-based accountability, and there is a broad hunger for another approach to improving teacher practice and student learning. But there is debate as to what data might more effectively and appropriately inform instructional improvement efforts. This session will highlight what happens when schools, districts, or school support organizations shift their focus “upstream” from academic outcomes to the developmental experiences and classroom conditions that are antecedents to student learning and development. Specifically, we explore the effects of student experience measures – student self-reported perceptions of their classroom learning environments – on teacher professional learning and practice change.
