Session Type: Symposium
As the world responded to increased visibility of violence against Black peoples in recent years, historically and predominantly white institutions (HPWIs) communicated a commitment to minoritized students, including by issuing statements of support (England & Purcell, 2020). Various programs have been implemented to address related issues on college campuses. However, students deserve more robust and critical systemic approaches. This symposium will provide insights into the experiences and perspectives of Black collegians across several four-year HPWIs. Participants included Black undergraduate students, urban and Appalachian alumni, and Black male doctoral students. These insights will enable the interrogation of oppressive policies and practices. The session will provide recommendations for material changes in postsecondary education to ensure consequential research results in consequential institutional transformations.
