Abstract

Recent studies have indicated the role of probiotics in regulating mood, cognition, and stress response via the gut-brain axis. This study analyzed the current literature on probiotic interventions to understand if they could represent a possible easy and affordable instrument to enhance students’ wellbeing and their learning outcomes in higher education. A scoping review of the literature was conducted. Through Scopus, Pubmed, and PsycInfo 10 articles were selected after full-text reading. Results showed that probiotics could positively influence the psychological and cognitive outcomes of healthy individuals in terms of reduction of depressive and anxiety symptoms and increasing brain activation in controlling and regulating stressful situations. This review pointed out several results that could have important implications in higher education.
