Racism and Black Education in the South: Past, Present, and Future Perspectives

Abstract

One glaring issue to many regarding the educational disenfranchisement of New Orleans’ Black community is the lack of responsibility or accountability in educational reforms given their lack of community aligned or informed practice. As a result, the educational stakeholders of New Orleans are unable to voice their concerns to powerholders or determine their ideal school system. Currently, Black parents, educators, a small number of non-profit organizations, and community activists continue to resist Charter Management Organizations' education that reformers forced onto the city of New Orleans. The experiences of critical educational stakeholders of New Orleans are where we direct our energy for this symposium.
