Abstract

When COVID-19 forced P-12 schools to temporarily transition to online learning, it exacerbated the already deep-seated educational inequities in communities across the United States. Employing a grounded theory approach with a constructivist design, this presentation explores how educators and community stakeholders in one small southeastern city created a free full-time volunteer-led K-2 learning pod for historically underserved students and discusses the opportunities and challenges experienced in its implementation. The findings of this study reveal the potential of equity-focused collaborations that accept risk, occupy uncomfortable liminal spaces, leverage informal networks in order to center the needs of the community, and fully embrace the assets and contributions of local partners.
