Graduate Student Council Division K Fireside Chat: The State of Teaching and the Future of Teacher Education

Abstract

The state of teaching continues to exist in a form of heightened politicization around teachers’ expected roles. Teachers – particularly Teachers of Color who intersect with multiple communities (e.g., LGBTQ+, first-generation) – face narratives written in policies and popularized in the media that seek to diminish their identities and agency in resisting inequity within education. As we reflect on the histories that have shaped this current state of education, and the future that will come to pass, we ask this panel to share their reflections, anticipations, and demands from the field. Specifically, we ask them to dream into a world where we (teachers, scholars, and stakeholders) adequately address inequities of whiteness, racial injustice, and carcerality perpetuated by teaching and teacher education.
