Abstract

The issues that Black faculty encounter in their pursuit for tenure and promotion can lead to isolation, mental health challenges, and the premature departure of Black faculty before reaching tenure and promotion. While many colleges and universities praise the importance of a diverse faculty, few institutions have implemented policies and procedures to increase the retention and success of Black faculty. This interactive Fireside Chat has three primary objectives (1) providing Black faculty with a brave space to address their unique experiences within the academy; (2) unpacking the racist toxicity and subjugation nature of predominantly White institutions; particularly as it relates to Black faculty; and (3) recommendations for faculty and campus leaders on how to be support and advocate for Black faculty.
