Abstract
Every American child has a right to educational opportunity, even those who have been sent out of their traditional school setting and into a disciplinary alternative education program (DAEP). A student's average time at a DAEP is 36 days, which translates to approximately seven school weeks. Most students sent to DAEPs are Black and Brown students who also happen to be disciplined at a disproportionate rate for more subjective infractions than their White counterparts. Being denied access to a rigorous curriculum could be the difference between academic achievement or continuing on the school-to-prison pipeline. This study seeks to interrogate the level of access students sent to DAEPs have to gifted education.
