Advancing Antiracist Teaching and Teacher Education: Insights From Division K 2022 Seed Grant Awardees

Abstract

This Division K Vice-Presidential Session features the winners of the Division K 2022 Anti-Racist Teaching and Teacher Education Seed Grants. The grant program supports cross-institutional research partnerships that advance knowledge about anti-racist teaching and teacher education policy and practice. The three awarded projects bring together researchers, teacher educators, and practitioners to study and enact replicable approaches/strategies to combat myriad forms of racial harm. The lead researchers will present findings from their projects and engage audience members in dialogue about research, practice and policy implications. The projects are:
• Storying to stay: Engaging Black women career teachers in Black feminist narrative and wellness practice, led by Erica B. Edwards and Sherrell A. McArthur;
• Uncovering racism, colonialism, and oppression in the French as a Second Language (FSL) curriculum and creating opportunities for subversion for teachers, led by Marie-Emilie (Mimi) Masson;
• Co-design and implementation of an anti-racist biliteracy program for young bilingual children using critical translanguaging pedagogy, led by Zhongfeng Tian and Alisha Nguyen.
