Intersectionality and Teacher Education Research

Abstract

Intersectionality addresses multiple social identities, interlocking marginalizations, and systemic oppressions. Too often education researchers allude to intersectionality as if it were merely multiple identities, without acknowledging its Black feminist roots. In this Division K Vice-Presidential symposium, teacher education researchers will discuss their efforts to push the field’s acknowledgement of intersectionality as conceptualized by Black and women of color feminists (i.e., Kimberlé Crenshaw or Patricia Hill-Collins, Combahee River Collective, Chicana feminists, etc.). They will offer methodological implications for the study of intersectionality in teaching and teacher education.
