Division C Equity and Inclusion Session. "Allow Me to Reintroduce Myself": Doing Equity Work in Ways That Disrupt Systemic Oppression and Empower Marginalized Groups

Abstract

Many scholars and practitioners engaged in research and praxis that examine learning and instruction face tension between wanting to do equity work and not knowing how to do so effectively. The tension exists for novice, intermediate, and expert scholars as changes in global, social-political contexts impact how equity work is defined and operationalized within various educational spaces. In efforts to help scholars and practitioners do “good” equity work, this session 1.) offers insight into some of the foundational scholarship on critical, equity perspectives to (re)introduce core ideas that spurred the movements, and 2.) facilitate conversation among the participants regarding how they can operationalize critical equity perspectives within their research, teaching, and practice.
