Toward Equity-Centered, Vision-Aligned Research: Transparency and Accessibility in Chicago Public Schools

Abstract

In this session, Chicago Public Schools and our partners demonstrate a reshaping of research accessibility. Namely who is research conducted by, for and with? Equity-Centered, Vision-Aligned Research is a key lever in the theory of change proposed by the district’s External Research team, whose vision advocates for radical inclusivity as a key measure in the pursuit of truth in research. We examine our circles of impact, beginning with the internal offices at the district, and then expanding outward to include our collaborative research partners, school-based staff and families of our students. This session highlights our key initiatives, including a collaborative research effort with Dr. Eve Ewing from the University of Chicago Dept of Race, Diaspora, and Indigeneity. We hope to create a robust and transformative understanding of how district data can be used to evaluate and understand the varied social contexts of Chicago Public Schools when it is conducted with and for our communities. Dr. Ashani Johnson-Turbes, VP and Director of the Center on Research Equity at NORC will join us as a discussant.
