Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
This session focuses on Division J's call to "investigate, dismantle, redesign, and reconstruct systems that would enhance equity in higher education." We look to the practice of abolition to dismantle the conditions imposed by colonialism and anti-Blackness in higher education by bringing together abolition and Black Studies scholars to share thoughts on what it means to practice abolition in higher educational settings to foster environments of collective freedom and care. How can we practice abolition to (re)imagine higher education as a life-affirming institution? What is needed to build relationships and community to carry this work? How can we enact abolition values and beliefs in higher education research? What lessons can we enact from abolition for new world-making and future dreaming?
