Abstract

The global pandemic resulted in an unintentional deschooling experiment globally. Studies on the impacts of the pandemic focus on disruptions or what was lost. However, the COVID-19 pandemic -along with deepening and widening global contradictions- presents a critical motive and opportunities for reimagining education and the society as a whole. In this panel, we ask leading education scholars to generate big ideas for the futures of education for inclusion, justice, and expansive learning. Scholars will go beyond what was lost and what was gained during the pandemic. Informed by the cultural-historical activity theory, critical pedagogies, and utopian methodologies, the panelists will discuss how emancipatory education systems can be built with local stakeholders (students, families, educators, policy makers, academia, civil rights activist and social movements, civic organizations), especially those from historically minoritized communities.
