Remembering Dr. Zollie Stevenson Jr., a Colleague, Educator, and Friend

Abstract

Mentoring is an essential attribute of scaffolding for individuals during the academic process of attaining a degree as well as developing as a new professional. According to research (Davis, T, Jones, M. Settles, I, and Russell, P., 2022), persons of color often have negative mentoring experiences, difficulty finding proper mentors, and a lack of building mentoring and mentee relationships. Dr. Zollie Stevenson, Jr. was an exemplary mentor because he clearly understood the research on mentoring and the impact of developing mentoring relationships with students and colleagues. He was an outstanding educator, mentor, fraternity brother, administrator, and father. He had a long and distinguished history of serving in significant roles across many academic institutions, state, and federal government. He left an indelible mark on the profession and the academic community.

The session will provide an overview of Dr. Zollie Stevenson, Jr’s contributions to the academic profession, the importance of mentoring, his involvement in AERA and Division H, other professional affiliations, and personal accounts of his impact on colleagues, students, and friends.
