Remembering Carl Kaestle: A Pillar of Education Scholarship

Abstract

The education research community, in the US and globally, lost a champion this year. Carl Kaestle was, in the words of one of his colleagues, "a scholar's scholar," and indeed left an intellectual and personal legacy that will last in perpetuity. As historian, policy analyst, mentor, friend, and unflagging advocate for good research to improve teaching and learning, Carl was in a league of his own. We will gather at the annual meeting in Chicago to reflect on Carl's contributions, remember how lucky we have been to know him, and use the occasion to dedicate ourselves to advancing the values he so eloquently and courageously modeled.
