Research that includes sexual and gender minoritized (SGM) adolescents has increasingly focused on the coming out process. Coming out, or sharing one's sexual and gender identity with others, is unique to the SGM community and may present as minority stress for many SGM adolescents. Researchers who work with SGM adolescents should consider empirically supported measures whose reliability and validity have been established with SGM adolescents. Given the influence Mohr and Fassinger's (2002) outness inventory (OI) has on research with SGM adolescents, examining its validity with this population is vital. The current study asks the following research question: Is the OI’s three-factor structure (i.e., family, religion, and world) a valid measure that captures the salient social contexts among SGM adolescents?
