Does Motor Skill Competence Influence Volitional Physical Activity Behavior? Focusing on Sport-Specific Skills

Fri, April 12, 7:45 to 9:15am, Philadelphia Marriott Downtown, Floor: Level 4, Room 403

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine effects of different sport competence on PA behavior in different contexts. Specifically, we examined effects of jump rope (JR) competence and basketball (BB) competence on students’ PA behavior in the following contexts: (a) JR-free-play class, (b) BB-free-play class, (c) non-JR&BB-free-play class, (d) JR behavior during leisure time, (e) BB playing behavior during leisure time, and (f) MVPA behavior during leisure time. A total of 134 sixth grade students participated in this study. These results suggest that the positive effect of motor skill competence on PA behavior may be sport specific. The competence of some sports (e.g., JR) may not influence students’ PA behavior, while the competence of other sports (e.g., BB) may.
