When teachers select books featuring characters with disabilities, the accuracy of representations is as important as the quality of the text; however, finding authentic representations of characters with disabilities can be challenging. In this presentation, we will discuss the findings of a study focused on how characters with disabilities are portrayed in realistic fictional books that are written for young children. In addition, we will share the perceptions and suggestions of individuals who self-identify as disabled who reviewed these books. We will highlight several of the books and discuss how teachers may consider using them in their classrooms.
