Abstract

This paper presents the findings of a critical literature review of papers published in journals and presented at conferences under the theme of citizenship and citizenship education. This review provides an opening for understanding how citizenship education scholarship has evolved over time, with a particular focus on changes from the 1990s to the present. The paper describes new and continuing themes or areas of work in citizenship education and discusses factors that have influenced change. The paper concludes with a discussion of where scholarship in citizenship and citizenship education might focus on next.
