Teacher Leadership During the COVID-19 Pandemic in U.S. National Blue Ribbon Schools

Abstract

This study’s purpose was to determine how teacher leadership standards were evident within US National Blue Ribbon Schools (NBRS) and how these schools supported teacher leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic. This study extends recent NBRS research about teacher leadership, featuring principal and teacher leader interviews (n = 20) from 2020 and 2021 NBRS and these NBRS’ written applications. Result themes included a wide breadth of teacher leadership work, cultural and strategic school supports for teacher leaders, and humility and commitment of teacher leaders.
