I share the findings from a longitudinal, publicly-engaged research project in a community writing center in urban Philadelphia. This writing center was part of a network of centers across the city, and this site, in particular, was founded to serve the diverse Latinx population of South Philadelphia. I will share the long-time understandings that have emerged from this engaged work, including how translingual writing occurs in community learning spaces, how public pedagogies are avenues for freedom and agency, and how those two work together to create a space of resistance and remedy for both children and adults who more often than not experience painful pedagogies of restraint and correction in official schooling spaces.
