Impacts of Open Educational Resources on Student Learning and Professor Pedagogy in an FGCS (First-Generation College Student) Environment

Abstract

This study showcased the impacts on students and professors at a majority first-generation-college-student (FGCS) college when open educational resources (OER) replaced traditional textbooks. The research questions for this three-year longitudinal study included how OER impacted successful course completion and instructional practice of faculty members involved. Methods included the collection of faculty interviews (n=16), student questionnaires (n= 65), and course completion data (n=1,575) as well as cost reduction data (n=35). These data indicated that perceived course quality increased from both student and faculty perspectives. Additional data collection is under way and result in five years of data at the time of presentation. Early evidence indicates increased access to academics and academic success for FGCS with the use of OER.
