This visual and poetic arts-based inquiry explores the experiences of two doctoral students of different racial backgrounds within the same program at a predominantly white institution. Drawing upon Black Feminist Thought and motherscholarship, we investigated the nuances of gender, race, class, and ability that influence our journeys within our program. Creating art for scholarship through shared conversations, findings are presented through both photographic and poetic interpretations that compliment and complete each other. This work shares viewpoints that capture the intersectional ways we experienced both privilege and oppression within our doctoral studies while exposing differences that might otherwise have been overlooked. The implications for future research include examining the ways hidden curriculum and expectations may impact students’ experiences in the program.
