Adapting Core Pedagogy for Online Teacher Preparation: Zoom Breakout Rooms for Online Repeated Teaching Rehearsals

Sun, April 14, 7:45 to 9:15am, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

In February/March 2020, teacher educators were forced to reimagine core pedagogical strategies, such as teaching rehearsals, due to the rapid shift from face-to-face to online instruction. Starting during the COVID-19 pandemic and continuing through Spring 2023, Zoom breakout rooms were used to integrate online repeated microteaching rehearsals (RMTR) into an elementary science methods course. Online RMTR enabled instructors and elementary teacher candidates to engage in a cycle of practice planning and teaching a science lesson to different groups of their peers with reflection and revision between lesson iterations. Reflections and surveys (n=320) showed appreciation for the online RMTR as part of their science methods coursework, improvement in their understanding of content knowledge, and increased confidence to plan and teach science.
