Exploring Environmental Themes in Children’s Literature: The Green Earth Book Award–Nominated Picture Books for 2023 (Poster 3)

Abstract

The study analyzed 37 children's picturebooks nominated for the 2023 Green Earth Book Awards (GEBA) to explore environmental themes. Through content analysis, three prominent themes emerged: nature appreciation, environmental issues, and environmental stewardship. The books emphasized the importance of appreciating nature and showcased various actions by professionals, government, communities, and characters to inspire young readers' involvement in environmental stewardship. The analysis highlighted the positive over negative human impact on the environment and emphasized the power of empathy in motivating young readers to take action. This comprehensive analysis supports and promotes environmental education initiatives for children.
