Not All Writing Is Created Equal: Third-Graders’ Online Collaborative Writing Across Tools and Genres

Thu, April 11, 4:20 to 5:50pm, Pennsylvania Convention Center, Floor: Level 200, Exhibit Hall B

Abstract

As evidenced in our educational standards both collaboration and digital multimodal communication are essential skills in today’s world. While researchers have studied both the benefits and nature of multimodal and CW, the majority of these studies occurred with college students focused on a single genre and employed only one writing tool. As such, more research is needed that explores the processes of elementary students’ collaborative and multimodal writing across a variety of genres and tools. Using qualitative methods, this study explored how culturally and linguistically diverse elementary students collaborated when writing within online spaces. Furthermore, this study examined how different genres and tools mediated their collaborations, opportunities for learning, and the development of 21st century skills when writing.
