In 1918 Carl Sandburg wrote a poem titled The Grass that describes how over time the horror of war is forgotten. Taking this poem as the conceptual starting point this article uses a critical pedagogy of remembrance (Simon, Rosenberg, & Eppert, 2000) to ask pre-service social studies teachers to discuss what about war should be remembered and how their teaching may be or should be influenced by student background and school context.
